The word "Ylang ylang" means flower of flowers and the essential oil is taken from a small flowered tree which grows in the Philippines, Java, Sumatra and Madagascar.  

There are pink, mauva yellow flowered variety and the finest oil comes from the yellow flowered trees.  The first part of the oil, which is drawn off during the steam distillation process is the highest quality and is sold under the name Ylang ylang, while that which comes from the latter part of the process is of a poorer quality and sold under the name Cananga.  In either case the therapeutic qualities are the same but the perfume of the Cananga is less refined.

The most improtant property of Ylang ylang essential oil is its ability to slow down over rapid breathing and over rapid heartbeat.  These symptoms may appear when someone is shocked, anxious, angry or frightened and ylang ylang is very effective in the short term.
