Essential Oils and Blends Safety Guidelines
Essential Oils Safety Guidelines
General Safety Guidelines
-
Keep lids on and out of the reach of children and pets.
-
Keep away from the eyes. If any oil gets into the eye rinse with full fat milk. If stinging continues, seek medical advice.
-
Keep away from plastics and polished surfaces
-
Keep out of sunlight and in a cool place. Essential oils are flammable so treat carefully.
-
Do not take internally or digest unless under strict supervision of a qualified aromatherapist.
-
Always dilute to 5% or less when using on the skin. Whilst tea tree and lavender may be used directly on the skin, it is advised this should not be done on a regular basis and extreme caution should be taken in case of skin sensitisation, especially with tea tree.
-
Always be cautious if pregnant, suffering from a seizure disorder, blood pressure problems or other allergies. If in doubt seek medical advice.
-
Before use, it is advised that oils are patch tested on the skin of the inner arm. Leave for 24hours, watching for any adverse reaction.
-
Always seek professional advice for any medical problem, especially if your symptoms do not clear or become worse. Do not stop taking any prescribed medications and consult your doctor to make sure it is safe to combine any of these products with medication your are taking.
The following are groups of oils with known, potential, harmful effects.
If pregnant avoid: Basil, cedarwood, clay sage, coriander, hyssop, jasmine, juniper, marjoram, oregano, myrrh, peppermint, rockrose, rosemary, sage and thyme. There is no proof we are aware of that these oils may be harmful to mother or foetus, however there have been some reports of possible related bleeding and allergic reaction.
If breast feeding avoid: Mint, Hyssop, parsley, sage and jasmine
If suffering from any seizure disorder avoid: Basil, fennel, hyssop, rosemary and sage. There is no proof that these oils will trigger a reaction but other oils can be used as an alternative thus avoiding any risk
If suffering from blood pressure problems avoid: Pine, Rosemary, Sage and Thyme. There is no proof that these oils will trigger a reaction but other oils can be used as an alternative thus avoiding any risk
Do not drink alcohol, operate machinery or drive after use: Chamomile, Clary Sage and Marjoram. This rule of thumb applies to any relaxation treatment. It is recommended to take time after a treatment to have a drink of water and freshen up before attempting any activity requiring concentration and an alert state.
It is strongly recommended that you do not use : Calamus, yellow camphor, horseradish, mugwort, mustard, rue, sassafras, southernwood, tansy and wormwood. These oils are known dangers and as such I will not keep them in my house or sell them through this site. They offer no benefits that cannot be gained through other, safer oils. I would seriously question purchasing oils from any site willing to take the risk of stocking these products.
